Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses a combination of light energy and photosensitizing agents to target and destroy abnormal cells. It is commonly used to treat various skin conditions, including precancerous lesions and certain types of skin cancer.

How Does PDT Work?

PDT involves two main steps:

  1. Application of Photosensitizer: A photosensitizing agent, such as 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), is applied to the skin. This agent is absorbed by abnormal cells.
  2. Light Activation: After a specified period, the treated area is exposed to a specific wavelength of light, usually blue or red light. The light activates the photosensitizer, producing a form of oxygen that destroys the abnormal cells

Conditions Treated with PDT

  • Actinic Keratosis: Precancerous skin lesions caused by sun damage.
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma: A common type of skin cancer.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Another type of skin cancer.
  • Acne: Severe cases of acne can be treated with PDT.
  • Psoriasis and Rosacea: PDT can help manage these chronic skin conditions

Benefits of PDT

  • Minimally Invasive: PDT is a non-surgical treatment option.
  • Targeted Treatment: It specifically targets abnormal cells while sparing healthy tissue.
  • Cosmetic Improvement: PDT can improve skin texture, reduce sunspots, and stimulate collagen production

Side Effects and Risks

  • Redness and Swelling: Treated areas may become red and swollen.
  • Sensitivity to Light: Patients must avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor light for a few days after treatment.
  • Discomfort: Some patients may experience mild pain or burning during the light exposure

Preparation and Aftercare

  • Before Treatment: Avoid sun exposure and certain medications that may increase sensitivity to light.
  • After Treatment: Protect the treated area from sunlight, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions, and use soothing creams if needed.
