Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin disease that results from chronic inflammation and abnormal blood vessel response to dilating stimuli.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disease that primarily affects fair-skinned individuals between the ages of 30-65. It results from chronic inflammation and abnormal blood vessel response to dilating stimuli. Rosacea is not a form of acne or infection, as some people believe.

Types of Rosacea

  • Generalized redness of the face
  • Red bumps and pimples
  • Flushing/Blushing
  • Skin thickening and redness
  • Eye irritation

Suggestions To Improve Rosacea

Avoid certain environmental, physical or emotional factors such as:

  • Drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks
  • Eating spicy foods or chocolate
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Sun exposure, such as when driving or sitting next to a window
  • Stress
  • Wind

What Kind Of Treatments Are There?

Rosacea cannot be cured, but it can be managed.

Because many people with rosacea also have blemishes that appear to be acne, they may try to use harsher acne products to help clear the lesions. These blemishes occur because the proper oil is not being produced in the skin. However, the skin of people with rosacea reacts very strongly to things that can cause inflammation in the skin – including many acne products.

It is critical to wear sunscreen every day. It is also important to consult a medical provider to assess which treatment options will work best for your individual needs.
